Gujarat Maritime Cluster will bring together the maritime / shipping industry players along with relevant government regulatory agencies in GIFT City, leveraging on their proximity and improved access.
To evolve as a Maritime Cluster par excellence, providing one stop solution for all maritime services while attaining economic growth, employment generation and industry – academia confluence in the region
Our mission is to catalyse the growth of maritime sector in the region through creation of an eco-system of maritime / shipping services providers, associations and regulators co-existing and collaborating to deliver world class services, by ensuring –
As this Maritime Cluster will focus on maritime related services, it is envisaged that the Cluster would need sophisticated urban infrastructure along with global/national financial institutions. Gujarat Maritime Cluster is coming up in GIFT City at Gandhinagar which is India’s first operational Greenfield Smart City and only International Financial Service Centre (IFSC).
GIFT City, which has been ranked amongst Top 3 Emerging Business Hubs in the world, is equipped with state- of-the-art infrastructure with India’s first underground utility tunnel, Gujarat’s first premier business club, robust IT infrastructure and district cooling system, amongst others. Further, benefits of a globally benchmarked IFSC makes GIFT City a preferred business destination evident by the good presence of financial institutions and banks.
Furthermore, the recently commenced Gujarat Maritime University (Gandhinagar) in vicinity to the Maritime Cluster will address the industry ready manpower requirements of the sector and will pave way for industry-academia collaboration for research and development.
By virtue of its strategic geographic location on the west coast of India, proactive policies & initiatives as well as robust industrial & support infrastructure, the state has emerged as flag bearer of India’s maritime success story and acts as the gateway to the Northern and Central hinterland and other states of India.
Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) – the regulator of Non-Major ports of the state, through proactive policies and farsighted measures, has been able to create a benchmark in port infrastructure and strong ecosystem of port operators and other associated players in the State.
However, despite the fact that Gujarat handles far more cargo throughput than any other state in India, there is no distinct town or city in Gujarat with a strong maritime identity. In other words, it can be said that Gujarat does not have the soft infrastructure like Ship Chartering/Leasing, Ship Operations & Management, Shipping Finance, Shipping Arbitration and other related services in place to complement the hard infrastructure that Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) has created for facilitation of the trade.
To address these concerns, a first of its kind initiative in India – a ports, shipping & logistics services based maritime cluster project at GIFT City in Gandhinagar, was conceptualized by Gujarat Ports Infrastructure and Development Company (GPIDCL) – a wholly owned subsidiary of Gujarat Maritime Board, on the lines of the ones that exist in leading maritime nations.
Gujarat Maritime Cluster is conceived as a dedicated ecosystem of Ports, Maritime / Shipping and Logistics services providers along with pertinent Government Regulators, in the same geographic ensemble (GIFT City), leveraging on their proximity and improved access, thus enhancing the competitiveness and growth of the maritime sector.
