Magdalla Port is a lighterage port situated on the west coast of India in Southern Gujarat. The port is about 16 Kms upstream of the River Tapi, on its southern bank. Magdalla Port is navigable through the Magdalla Port Channel.
The Deep-Water Anchorage is 15 Nautical Miles southwest from Magdalla Port. Approach channel is 16,000 metres in length and 150 metres width, marked by catamaran buoys with lights.
The industrial development in Surat is attributed to the presence of a higher number of diamond processing, textiles, chemical and petrochemical industries. Surat processes 10 out of 12 varieties of diamonds of the world. Such diamond processing contributes to about 65% (₹ 45,000 crore) of the total diamond exports from India.
Surat is also known as the ‘Synthetic Capital of India’. This is because of the large amount of power looms present in the district. There are over 65,000 power looms providing over seven lakh jobs in the district. Surat also attracts a sizeable FDI in various sectors like energy, oil and petroleum.
A total of nine Industrial estates are present in Surat. There are total 52,252 industrial units registered in Surat of which over 41,300 are small and medium scale industrial units. Some of the key industries of Surat include textiles, chemicals, dying & printing, diamond processing, zari (silver) making and engineering and related activities.
Of all the MSME industrial units, the textile sector has the maximum industrial units (around 24,000 units) followed by repairing & service industry (more than 11,000 units). Most of the small-scale industries are located in Choryasi, Mangrol and Olpad, Manvi and Palsana tehsils of the district.
Petrochemicals has a major presence in the Hazira region of Surat district. More than 20 large and medium companies are located in Hazira which deal with petrochemicals primarily along with fertilizers, heavy engineering, steel, energy and port related activities.
There are two functional SEZs present in Surat. One is the SURSEZ Diamond and Gem Development corporation while the other is Sachin Apparel Park.
